A Net Saves Lives

The Golden Gate Bridge is a renowned landmark in San Francisco. And upon its completion in 1937, it set a precedent for suspension bride designs the world over. Sadly, 11 men died during its construction. However, more would have lost their lives if not for the ingenuity of the structural engineer, Joseph Strauss.
Way before the formation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA), Strauss’ concern about the safety of his men made him have a net installed underneath the bridge. This timely intervention went on to save the lives of 19 workers.
