Wyoming and the Fight for Women Suffrage

It wasn’t until the 19th amendment of the U.S. constitution that women were guaranteed the right to vote. Wyoming surely spearheaded this move by being the first U.S. territory to grant women the franchise. However, in 1980, Congress demanded that Wyoming revoke women’s suffrage as a condition for giving them statehood.

Rather than heed this order, the state’s legislature insisted that they would remain out of the Union for 100 years rather than come in without the women. In the end, they won the battle, and Congress gave in. It’s fascinating that since 1984, every U.S. presidential election has had more turnout of eligible female voters than eligible male voters.
