The City That Stops for a Minute Each Year

Of the atrocities committed during World War II, the forcible consignment of Jews in Warsaw to Nazi-run extermination camps remains fresh in the minds of many. And many decades later, the city of Warsaw in Poland still remembers those who bravely resisted German occupation for 63 days.

Every year on August 1st, when the clock strikes five, the city comes to a standstill, and all vehicles and pedestrians freeze for a minute. It is done to honor those who fought for freedom from the Nazi forces during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.
