Titanic Rescuer Goes On To Survive Two World Wars

Speaking of heroes, the second officer of the Titanic, Charles Herbert Lightoller, refused to get off the ship until he’d helped others on board. In the process, he got trapped underwater, but that wasn’t the end of him. The ship’s exploding boiler set him loose, and he lived to see another day.
One would think Lightoller would have had enough of near-death experiences, but he wasn’t to be held back from his service to humanity. The officer went on to serve with distinction in the two world wars, saving the lives of 127 men at Dunkirk. He released a memoir, “Titanic and Other Ships,” where he recounts his adventures.
