Fish Eggs Survive Trip Through Bird Innards

Scientists have long wondered how isolated bodies of water can suddenly become populated by fish. A miracle? Science has an answer. It turns out it’s all thanks to the resilience of fish eggs. For these eggs, getting gobbled up by waterfowls and ducks does not mark their end.

Even after getting attacked by stomach acids, these eggs survive and remain viable after the birds poop them out. This discovery came to light in 2020 and shows one of many possible ways migratory waterbirds may help disperse fish populations.
