Can you think of a better rom-com duo than Richard Gere (‘Edward Lewis’) and Julia Roberts (‘Vivian Ward’) in “Pretty Woman?” The 1990 movie relied heavily on the charisma of its two main stars, but director Garry Marshall decided to “give them a hand” in a scene in which Gere presents Roberts with a beautiful necklace.
Roberts was supposed to simply pick up the necklace but, unbeknownst to her, Marshall told Gere to close the box as soon as she reached in. The unscripted moment made Roberts laugh out loud unexpectedly, and the surprise in her eyes feels authentic because it is authentic!
