Arguably the most detail-obsessed director of all time, Stanley Kubrick was the visionary mind behind the classic 1987 war film “Full Metal Jacket.” The movie was supposed to capture the absurdity of war and featured R. Lee Ermey in the role of the mindless, rambling, angry official ‘Sgt. Hartman.’
Ermey did an excellent job in the role, delivering lines as memorable as “I’ll bet you could suck a golf ball through a garden hose” with shivering realism. But did you know that about 50% of his lines in the movie were improvised? It worked out brilliantly in the end.
