Despite its unassuming appearance, each individual bubble algae is a single cell that can grow to an astonishing size of up to 5 inches in diameter, earning it the title of the largest single-cell organism on Earth. Meet Valonia ventricosa, the intriguing organism found in tropical and subtropical oceans and seas worldwide.
While the outer membrane of bubble algae is composed of cellulose, similar to other plants, it is the unique arrangement of crystals that gives it a distinct shiny appearance. Surprisingly, despite the publication of over 2,000 scientific papers, many mysteries still surround the anatomical properties and functions of bubble algae, leaving much to be explored and discovered.
