General Douglas MacArthur – 1951, Capitol, Washington D.C. – Farewell Speech to the United States Congress
As one of the United States’ foremost military leaders, Douglas MacArthur spent a great deal of his life and career in figurative and literal trenches. So, when the time came for his retirement, he left on a high note with a farewell speech addressing Congress in 1951.
In it, he referenced an army ballad that goes, “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.” In his closing remarks. MacArthur, who was working as a commander in the Korean War before his departure, is credited for the United States’ triumphant campaign in the Pacific region during World War II.
