Abraham Lincoln – 1865, The Capitol, Washington D.C. – Second Inaugural Address as President
Although it took less than ten minutes to recite, Abraham Lincoln’s second presidential inaugural address contains several memorable phrases that remain significant in American history. Delivered amid the American Civil War, it’s likened to a sermon and notably used biblical allusions to condemn slavery.
With its powerful delivery and masterful use of words, the speech has been immortalized in films several times. That list includes Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” which saw Daniel Day-Lewis transformed through makeup to play Honest Abe. Unfortunately, Lincoln himself passed away a month after the speech and shortly before the war’s conclusion.
