Jesse Jackson – 1984, San Francisco, California – Democratic National Convention Speech
Jesse Jackson’s attempts at winning the Democratic nomination for president might not have panned out, but his efforts were not all in vain. On July 17, 1984, he delivered what many consider as one of the greatest speeches ever uttered at a nomination convention.
In a televised event watched by 33 million viewers, he sought to mend the disunity that his candidacy, noted for its championing of the so-called Rainbow Coalition, created. Amid roaring applause, he pledged his support for Walter Mondale, who was the 42nd vice president of the United States.
