John L. Lewis – 1937, Washington D.C. – Speech on Labor and the American Nation
A labor leader, John L. Lewis, had a way with words that made people want to listen to him. Among his well-known rallying speeches is one he delivered on September 9, 1937, in Washington D.C. In it, he spoke about the founding of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, for which he served as president.
What’s more, he advocated for labor rights, particularly in the steel industry, and defended the importance of unionization. Speaking of the latter, Lewis notably headed the United Mine Workers of America, which is still representing employees today, and established a welfare and retirement fund for its members.
