Years after her passing in 2013, former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is still a relevant political figure today. The first woman to hold the United Kingdom’s highest office, she earned the nickname “The Iron Lady” for her uncompromising stances. And she proved worthy of that moniker many times.

One of those is when the University of Oxford graduate exclaimed, “The lady’s not for turning!” during a Conservative Party Conference speech delivered in the city of Brighton in 1980. The quote, which was, in turn, a reference to the play “The Lady’s Not For Burning,” was said in response to those who expected Thatcher to change her counter-inflationary policies.
