Harold Macmillan – 1960, Cape Town, South Africa – Speech to the Parliament of South Africa
Harold Macmillian, then the British prime minister, made history on February 3, 1960, when he delivered his famous bow to the “Wind of Change” speech addressing the Parliament of South Africa. In the span of 50 minutes, he acknowledged the burgeoning African national consciousness and called for its recognition.
Macmillan also offered criticism to South Africa itself, saying that Britain didn’t support apartheid. His words rang true even after his time in office. What’s more, the United Kingdom was able to establish an amicable relationship with former President Nelson Mandela’s government, which marked the end of institutionalized segregation in South Africa.
