The Truth About Togo: What They Didn’t Tell You About The Amazing Dog Hero Of The Serum Run

Bill Shannon Launches The Serum Run

The Great Race of Mercy kicked off after the package of serum weighing 20 pounds or 9 kilograms was delivered to the first musher named William “Wild Bill” Shannon. The delivery was made at the train station in Nenana by 9:00 pm on the 27th of January.

The weather was −46 °C, a frost so strong it could snap off a man’s fingers without him realizing it. Shannon’s dogs, 11 in number, were mostly inexperienced and had never been on a trip of such circumstance. All the odds were against him, but the lives of thousands of people and children were at stake, so he plowed on.
