Shannon was supposed to travel to Nulato, where he would give the serum to Seppala, who would then go the rest of the distance back to Nome. This sounded a simple enough concept, but even as Shannon jogged alongside the sled to keep himself from freezing to death, he knew the plan was hanging by a thread.
The trail had been destroyed by horses, so he had chosen an alternative route through the unforgiving ice of the river. He had lost the feeling in parts of his body, his face had been rendered black by frostbite, and he’d had to abandon three of his dogs, but still, he moved forward.
