The last rider before Seppala’s stretch of the relay, Henry Ivanoff, had stayed in Shaktoolik to collect the serum from whichever rider was coming in from the east. As soon as he received the serum on January 31, he turned his team west towards Nome, hoping to intercept Seppala.
The last thing he expected was to have his dogs distracted by a reindeer at such a precarious moment. He had barely made it outside Shaktoolik when the disturbance happened, threatening to ruin such a delicate plan. Naturally, he was already getting frustrated, but in a miraculous moment, he spotted Seppala’s team sprinting by.
