As the story is recounted, Ivanoff shouted loudly to get Seppala’s attention. It would have been terrible if Seppala had missed him and traveled far east, only to discover he had bypassed the serum. That didn’t happen, though, as the teams linked up, thanks to Ivanoff’s screams, and by some accounts, the help of their dogs.
Seppala had been briefed by Ivanoff that the epidemic had worsened, so he immediately turned back towards Nome. Once again, he set out to brave the raging frost and the unreliable ice of the sea. But as always, he had something he could rely on in hazardous situations like that: Togo.
