Togo’s Long Deserved Accolades

It’s always been a major complaint of historians and insiders that Balto got much more credit for the run’s success than Togo. Balto, who spent the remainder of his years at the Cleveland Zoo, was built a statue in New York in 1925. In 1995, his popularity was revived after “Balto,” the animated movie named after him, was released.

It was only decades after Togo’s death that the public discovered the facts of the serum run’s true hero. In 2001, a statue was finally built for him in New York. Time Magazine took it a notch further when they named Togo the most heroic animal of all time.
