The Truth About Togo: What They Didn’t Tell You About The Amazing Dog Hero Of The Serum Run

A Musher’s Legacy And Death

Leonhard Seppala, who was into fishing and blacksmithing before becoming a musher, lived the rest of his days as a much-accomplished man. After the serum run, he moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, and later ended the dog shelter he had started in partnership with Elizabeth Ricker. He also participated in the 1932 Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in the sled dog racing event.

Seppala moved permanently to Seattle, Washington in 1946 before dying a few years later at the ripe age of 89. An accolade called the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award is given in his honor to competitive mushers who provide the best animal care for their dogs.
