Tiny Titans of the Tunnel: A Glimpse of the 1950s NYPD Tunnel Patrol
In the heart of the 1950s, New York’s Tunnel unleashed a fleet of ‘catwalk cars’ for patrolling the Hudson River’s belly. Previously, officers were afoot, wrangling traffic on the mean streets of New York. But 1954 brought a game changer – these compact, peculiarly toy-like patrol vehicles.
Their power? A humble eight-horsepower engine propelling them to a top speed of 35mph. Don’t be fooled by their size though; despite their single-seater design and minimal storage, these mini motors revolutionized the way tunnel patrolling was done, serving dutifully till 2011. So here’s to the little-known heroes of the NYPD, making hundreds of officers’ lives that much easier.
