Mickey Guyton – Black Like Me

In the documentary Country Music, filmmaker Ken Burns uses a photo, video, and historical evidence to prove that country music does indeed find its roots in African sounds and instrumentation. This is why Mickey Guyton should not feel out of place as a country musician.
She initially broke into the scene in 2015 with an EP called Unbreakable. But she really made her mark in 2020 with the song Black Like Me, earning her a Grammy Nomination. At 37, she has a clear complexion that does great no-makeup selfies. In May 2021, Guyton sang the national anthem at the National Memorial Day Concert. She’s the first African-American to do this.
