They are Multilingual
The idea that Amish people solely speak English is among the most prevalent misconceptions about their way of life. Even while the majority of Amish villages do teach English, they really start by learning another language. Of course, they must speak English to communicate and conduct business with non-Amish people. They simply wouldn’t be able to interact with outsiders without it.
You’d be surprised to learn that despite having just completed eighth grade, many of them can speak Pennsylvania Dutch and High German in addition to English. This has the benefit of allowing for communication with different people without being limited by languages.
