James Garner – Corporal: 1944
After serving in the Merchant Marines, James Garner enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard. His service would see him take an active part in the Korean War, where he earned two Purple Hearts after his 1952 discharge. He had to wait for 32 years to receive the second Purple Heart as there was a mix up.
An entertainment career followed his service, and with Garner starring as the lead character in the series “Maverick,” he soon became a household name. Projects like “Promise” and “The Rockford Files” won him awards, which further distinguished him as a great actor before he passed away in 2014.
