Ruby Bridges, The First African-American Student To Attend A White Elementary School

Being the first to do anything is always a tough feat to accomplish. But things were particularly difficult for little Ruby Bridges, the first African-American student to attend a white elementary school in New Orleans. Her historic first day in 1960 was met with a ton of backlash and only one teacher agreed to teach her.
But there were also members of the community who came to her aid. Locals served as protectors for Bridges’ family and even walked behind the car that escorted her to school. One neighbor even gave her father a job after he was fired for allowing her to attend the school!
