David Isom Refusing To Toe The Color Line At A Segregated Pool

Once upon a time in America, even public swimming pools were segregated. Refusing to toe the color line that divided White people and African-Americans, David Isom broke the rules and swam on the other side of the pool one summer day in 1958.

According to Getty Images, this led officials to close the Florida swimming facility that same afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any more details about what happened following this incident. But wherever Isom is today, we bet he’s happy that public pools are now open to everyone, regardless of their skin color.
