A Soldier Weeps Where His Family Home Had Been
When Michelantonio “Tony” Vaccaro served in the United States Army during World War II, he brought his camera along with his rifle. As a result, he captured an insider look into what warfare was like for the very soldiers on the battlefield.
Among the haunting images, he shot is this photo of a soldier from the German army. Returning to his country after being a prisoner of war, he only found devastation in the place where his family’s home originally stood. Realizing the implications of the destroyed site, all he could do was bow his head in defeat and weep.
