Rosa Parks’ Arrest Photo After Refusing To Give Up Her Bus Seat

Rosa Parks helped spark a movement that ended segregation in the United States with one simple act of defiance: she refused to give up her bus seat to another passenger. The passenger happened to be a White person, meaning Parks, who happened to be African-American, was required by Alabama law to let them have her seat.
She was promptly arrested because of her refusal, resulting in this booking photo. The event led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which in turn became a nationwide Civil Rights movement. Segregation was ultimately outlawed in the ’60s, and Parks was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in the ’90s.
