A Washington D.C. Restaurant’s Special Offer Upon Stalin’s Death

As the leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin’s legacy is marred by allegations of genocide. Such accusations largely stemmed from the Ukrainian famine or the Holodomor of the early ’30s, which affected millions of people. So, when Stalin passed away in 1953, this restaurant in Washington D.C. decided to mark the event with a special offer.

Pictured here is server Eileen Keenan putting up a poster for free borscht for diners. The dish is a kind of soup made of beets and other vegetables that originated in Ukraine. That said, it was a fitting way to commemorate those who didn’t make it through the famine.
