The Three Unlikely Sisters
The Native Americans had a planting tradition involving winter squash, corn, and climbing beans. Thus the phrase, ‘the three sisters’ was coined. The usual practice was to plant the trio close together to thrive. The cornstalk offers support, acting as a trellis for the beans to climb.
The beans, in turn, pull nitrogen from the air to the soil and its vines stabilize the cornstalk on windy days. The large leaves of the winter squash shade the soil and retain moisture while preventing weeds. Interestingly, this planting method is now more commonplace with competitions for impressive displays.
