Ulm Is Homing the Homeless

The homeless population of the world is at an all-time rise. However, one German city is doing its best to provide people living in transitory and dangerous conditions with some respite. In 2021, officials in Ulm, a city west of Munich, spearheaded the installation of waterproof and windproof sleep pods on the streets.

The pods serve as emergency shelters for the homeless and are equipped with solar panels, thermal insulation, and a radio network. They also have motion sensors installed to alert social workers of their occupancy. These steel and wood cabins are known as Ulmer Nest, and each one can hold two people.
