World War I and the Dogs Who Saved Lives
Dogs are not just loyal; you have to add bravery to their attributes. They have always played an invaluable role in law enforcement and military operations. For example, during World War I, specially-trained canines played the role of paramedics and were trained to guide combat medics to soldiers who required extensive care.
Accordingly, their duties included seeking out wounded soldiers stuck in the trenches and carrying medical supplies in saddlebags that soldiers could use on themselves. These canines were known as mercy dogs or emergency dogs. Their input was critical to the war and is well documented.
