(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding, 1968, Soul
“(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was the masterpiece that Otis Redding left for the world to hear before he passed away. He started writing the lyrics in 1967 on a rented houseboat in California and completed it with guitarist Steve Cropper in Memphis. After passing that same year, Cropper mixed their recorded audio and added the sound of waves, whistles, and seagulls in the background, as Redding had requested.
When it was released in 1968, it became the first-ever posthumous single to top the charts in the United States. The song also became Redding’s most successful record, with over four million copies sold worldwide and two Grammy Awards.
