A Would-Be Rescue Ship
The Californian’s role in the Titanic tragedy has been a subject of much criticism and debate. Surprisingly, the ship was close to the sinking Titanic but failed to assist in the rescue efforts. The ship’s radio was turned off that night, so it didn’t receive any distress signals from the Titanic.
Moreover, the captain mistook the flares launched by the Titanic as celebratory fireworks and took no action, leading to the delayed response of SOS calls. Ironically, three years later, the Californian found itself in a similar predicament when it was hit by a German submarine during World War I in November 1915.
