Admiral Ackbar Was a Learning Experience in The Making
All “Star Wars” enthusiasts would remember Admiral Ackbar, the foremost military commander of the Rebel Alliance in “Return of the Jedi.” At first, crew members weren’t comfortable with the character visage. They thought it was too ugly and silly-looking. But director Richard Marquand insistently refused to alter the design.
He thought it was a perfect opportunity to teach kids that not all bad people are particularly unattractive, just as not all good people are good-looking. We wholeheartedly agree with this assessment. And considering that Ackbar remains a fan-favorite despite his minor role, it’s clear the director’s message was passed across.
