In construction, columns are commonly used in large buildings to distribute the weight of anything above with the ground below. It’s less common in urban and suburban homes, although that hasn’t stopped homeowners from getting them installed. They do have an aesthetic appeal and have become a decorative trend for some people.
This is mostly due to their link to ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece. They can also be used to withstand lateral force, which is valuable in places where the wind is a problem, or in the eventuality of an earthquake. For the latter, it’s of course based on the force of the quake.
