Death at the Beginning
It took three years, three thousand workers, and over three million rivets to build the RMS Titanic. However, the construction of the ship was not without tragedy. Before its maiden voyage, eight laborers lost their lives during the construction, a somber legacy that has been largely overlooked.
The ship’s builders used a hydraulic riveting machine to speed up the process of inserting rivets in the hull, an innovative and impressive feat at the time. This machine allowed the workers to insert around 3,000 rivets per day, making the process faster and more efficient. The massive undertaking would have taken approximately 100 years to drill and insert by hand.
