The Snow-Melt System in Holland Is the Gift That Keeps Giving
Residents of downtown Holland in Michigan have been enjoying snow-free streets since 1988. While their front yards may be packed with snow, these lucky residents can always count on their roads and sidewalks to be free of snow. It’s all thanks to the 168 miles of tubing looped beneath the concrete streets.
Warm water flows through these tubes, helping to melt away the ice and snow during the winter season. As a result, the city boasts the most extensive public-owned snowmelt system in North America. The icing on the cake is that all this is done using waste heat from power plants.
