Sergeant Bea Arthur
While Bea Arthur achieved fame from classic sitcoms like “The Golden Girls” and “Maude,” many fans would be surprised to learn about her life before gracing the small screens. In 1943, the US Marine Corps started accepting applications from females into non-combat but equally important roles. Arthur enlisted right away and from 1944 to 1945 was a dispatcher and truck driver.
By the time she was honorably discharged in 1945, she had risen to the rank of Sergeant. Her acting career started on Broadway and took off from there. By the time she passed on in 2009, she had warmed our hearts with her acting talent and service to the country.
