An act of Solidarity gets Honored
In 1939, German armed forces moved into Austria to annex the country into Nazi Germany. This move signaled an end of an independent Austria. While support from the allies would have helped, they were only mild. The government of Mexico was the most vocal in criticizing the annexing of Austria.
Ambassador Isidro Fabela delivered the government of Mexico’s thoughts to the League of Nations in Geneva, calling the annexing an attack on peace. Austria regained independence in 1945 after World War II, and in honor of Mexico’s support, renamed a square to Mexikoplatz in 1956.
