Since Amish children are born in communal houses where these documents are not required, neither birth certificates nor social security cards are a norm among the Amish people. The law exempted them from it in 1965 because they saw it as a sort of commercial insurance.
Instead, the Amish believe that members of the church should take care of each other’s needs if it arises. However, it might be an issue for those who opt to live outside their community in the current era. Due to their inability to obtain a driver’s license or evidence of citizenship, they encounter difficulties.
