Even though there are standards to follow, the Amish are surprisingly fair and frequently let the community members obey the rules however they see fit. Also, specific prohibitions include exceptions, such as the usage of automobiles in emergency cases. In contrast, there are times when regulations are broken and punishment is required.
It is unacceptable for a community member to knowingly break any codes essential to the Amish way of life. Meidung is when such individuals are socially shunned or neglected as a punishment for their actions. Even though this may not be practical in everyday life, setting boundaries, much like the Amish, is essential.
