The Family Income
The Amish place a high value on the family; households with seven to ten children are not unusual. This substantial birthrate fuels the expansion of the family. There is a sense of continuity and participation in family life because multiple generations frequently reside under one roof.
Everybody does their part to keep the household running smoothly, with their labor or cash—most of the time, both. Teenagers are urged to give their parents wages for the family’s benefit, even if it is their first employment. The Amish youth are taught to be responsible and have a saving mindset from an early age.
