Charles de Gaulle – 1940, London, United Kingdom – Speech Rallying the French People
It takes a great leader to rally its people even during times of despair. France had that kind of leader in Charles de Gaulle. Then an army general, he notably led his country to freedom against Germany’s occupation during World War II. One of his most notable acts is a speech delivered via radio broadcast addressing his nation following its fall in 1940.
In the “Appeal Of 18 June,” he urged the French to resist the occupation and boosted their morale to fulfill that very task. Aside from helping to liberate France, his speech is also credited for legitimizing radio, which was then a relatively new technology.
