William Wilberforce – 1789, London, United Kingdom – Speech to End Slave Trade
You can say abolitionist William Wilberforce stopped at nothing to end the United Kingdom’s participation in the slave trade. In 1789, for example, he delivered a three-hour speech in front of Parliament to justify his cause. And he didn’t stop there as his campaign also involved the proposal of several bills.
Wilberforce’s efforts, which were motivated by his moral values, ultimately paid off as he got the support of William Pitt, the Younger, then the British prime minister. The slave trade was abolished in 1807, and Wilberforce dedicated the rest of his days to anti-slavery causes.
