Indira Gandhi – 1974, New Delhi, India- Speech Celebrating the Indraprastha College For Women Jubilee
Indira Gandhi was India’s first and, so far, only female prime minister. So, it’s no surprise that she took a particular interest in women’s issues during her term. That personal cause took center stage in a speech she delivered at the jubilee celebrations of the Indraprastha College For Women in 1974.
Having had her own struggles in her schooling, she acknowledged the challenges her gender faced and presented new ones for the educated women in the audience that day. Thus, Gandhi remains a popular feminist figure in India today, decades after she passed away in 1984.
