Ronald Reagan – 1986, White House, Washington D.C. – Addressing the Challenger Disaster
The United States has had many successes in the space exploration arena. So, when the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger flight ended in disaster, many were left in shock and grief. It was in this situation that Ronald Reagan, then the country’s president, stepped up to the plate.
Reagan addressed the nation in a televised speech from the White House. In the span of just four minutes, he was able to serve as the nation’s eulogist consoling the disturbed and saluting those who passed away in the incident. Reagan succeeded in comforting people, but the public still eventually lost interest in the space shuttle program, which was ultimately shut down.
