Shirley Chisholm – 1970, The Capitol, Washington D.C. – Speech on the Equal Rights Amendment
Then a new member of the United States House of Representatives, Shirley Chisholm, delivered an impassioned speech advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment in 1970. She addressed her fellow legislators as a staunch proponent of the proposed amendment, enumerating how it would benefit working women and men.
Come the mid-’70s, a reported 60% of Black women were said to support the Equal Rights Amendment. Civil rights organizations like the NAACP also backed it. While the amendment is yet to be adopted, it became part of Chisholm’s legacy as a politician, along with her creation of the WIC nutrition program.
