The epic 1959 movie “Ben-Hur” had a budget of $15.175 million and required over 100 skilled fabric masters for the characters’ wardrobe. Huge sets were also built; statues were intricately sculpted, and cast members filmed for at least 12 hours a day. All these paid off when the film premiered and became the highest-grossing picture of that year.
The movie, which garnered a jaw-dropping 11 Academy Awards, tells the story of a Jewish prince, Judah Ben-Hur, in Jerusalem, who was thrown into the galleys by an old friend. The royal vows he would return with a vengeance and seek his rightful place.
