Martin Scorsese – China
Martin Scorsese has always been a rebel who continued to make energizing, aggressive films well into the ’80s. He was the director of the 1997 film “Kundun,” which told the story of Tenzin Gyatso’s early years to the deportation of the Dalai Lama to India.
The celebrated filmmaker had hoped to market this film in China, but events took a different path than anticipated. The studio tried to remove the problematic scenes and obtain Chinese approval, but it was insufficient. Not only was the movie banned after its premiere, but Scorsese’s entry into China and viewing any Disney pictures were also immediately prohibited.
